House Lessens Food Labeling and State Laws

When will Americans say enough is enough?

The FDA is being controlled by the special interest groups and lobbyist who have no loyalty to the American people safety, but to the companies who put out this food that they fight to keep from being labeled.

The House approved a bill Wednesday night that would wipe out state laws on safety labeling of food, potentially affecting alerts about carcinogenic ingredients, lead in candy and allergy-causing sulfites.

The vote was a victory for the food industry, which has lobbied for years for national standards for food labeling and contributed millions of dollars to lawmakers' campaigns. But consumer groups and state regulators warned that the bill would undo more than 200 state laws, including California's 1986 landmark Proposition 65, that protect public health.

The U.S. House approved a bill to wipe out 200 existing laws.

What type of laws?

Well, laws that regard what they feed the animals you eat, packaging labeling and much more. These companies want to feed cows hormones and GM food such as soy and feed grown by genetically modified means and not have to label it as such.
"The purpose of this legislation is to keep the public from knowing about the harm they may be exposed to in food," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., a chief critic of the measure.

more proof these people are corrupt and crooked when it comes to actually protecting the people.
Several critics argued that the bill was rushed through the House without complete hearings as a favor to a specific industry -- at the same time that members are talking about the evils of lobbying and proposing stricter ethical rules.

Under the bill, any state that wanted to keep its tougher standards for food labeling would have to ask for approval from the Food and Drug Administration, which has been criticized by food safety groups as slow to issue consumer warnings.

Keep in mind it would cost the state $400,000 to petition something they did not agree with and makes it somewhat impossible to actually protect people.

Keep in mind, these people want to store fish and meatsd in carbon monoxide, and have won to do so. If you are eating fish, there is a chance it is being packaged in carbon monoxide, which you will not know nor will it be labeled as such.

More:
Critics say the state laws have added costs for food manufacturers and distributors, who must comply with different rules in different states. The industry's backers claim the different labels confuse consumers.

There is no reason nor is there any excuse to allow regulatory inconsistency to drive up costs and keep some consumers in the dark on matters that may affect their health," said Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga.

The vote Wednesday was a sign of the tremendous power of the food industry in Congress. Corporations and trade groups that joined the National Uniformity for Food Coalition, which backed the bill, have contributed more than $3 million to members in the 2005-06 election cycle and $31 million since 1998, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.

A leading fund-raiser for the bill's chief sponsor, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., has been lobbying on the bill.

But Rogers denied there was a backroom deal with the food industry. He said supporters of the bill simply believe federal standards work better than state standards on food safety. - source

Read between the lines. They are wiping out state laws so they can show GM Food down your throat.

Leaked WTO Report Stirs GMO Controversy

'Leaked' WTO report stirs GM food controversy
A pressure group has alleged that a leaked confidential WTO ruling on the recent GM food trade dispute shows that many pro-GM arguments were lost.

UK-based environmental group Friends of the Earth (FoE) claims that the 1,000-page report, distributed earlier this month only to the countries involved in the dispute, reveals that despite claims to the latter, the US, Canada and Argentina in fact failed to win most of their arguments.

Isn't that nice. And it goes on to say...
But biotech industry body EuropaBio has slammed the pressure group for spreading "mischievous nonsense" and trying to frighten people.

"What I sense is that Friends of the Earth and others are making statements about the WTO suggesting that it is forcing people to have things they don't want, when this is not the case at all," Simon Barber, director of the plant biotech unit (PBU) of EuropaBio, told FoodNavigator.

"Argentina, Canada and the US were concerned that the full democratic process was not being used properly. People are not being forced to have things they do not want."

FoE however insists that the alleged leaked report, which Barber says he has not read, is the report that the biotech industry didnt want the public to see.

"It reveals that the big corporations that stand behind the WTO failed to get the big win they were hoping for," said FoE Europe GMO campaigner Adrian Bebb.

And yet most Americans are absolutely clueless about the amount of GM Foods and Genetically Modified Organisms being sold in grocery stores.
"Free trade proponents needed a clear victory in this dispute to be able to push governments in the EU and the developing world to accept genetically modified food."

Eat organic.
